Q. What are the Olympic Winter Games and when
are they held?
A. The Olympic Winter Games are a set of competitions under
the imprimatur of the International Olympic Committee. They occur
every four years. The XIX Winter Games are scheduled for February
7-24, 2002.
Q. What are the Paralympic Winter Games and
when are they held?
A. The Paralympics are a set of competitions under the imprimatur
of the International Paralympic Committee. They embrace fewer events
than the Olympics and are open to athletes with a variety of disabilities.
The VIII Paralympic Winter Games will be held from March 7 - 17,
2002.
Q. Is the University committed to support of
the 2002 Games?
A. The University has entered into a number of arrangements
and contracts with the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) to
provide facilities and services for the Olympics and Paralympics.
No educational funds are to be used for support of the Games. It
is important to the University's mission that these cooperative
endeavors go as well as possible. Our objective is to obtain maximum
benefits from the Games' presence while minimizing disruption to
our educational missions.
Q. For what periods will the campus be closed
for the 2002 Games?
A. On February 6 & 8, 2002, the University will be closed
to normal business operations; only essential services will be staffed.
On all other days campus will remain open. Areas restricted to public
access include the Stadium
and Village and some associated
parking lots. The University will take an extended "spring break"
during the Games but all functions other than classes will be in
operation at that time. See
the calendar for more information.
Q. Will any staff members be laid off or furloughed
for the 2002 Games?
A. No staff member will be out of work as a result of the
Olympic presence on campus.
Q. What impacts will the Games have on parking
in 2002?
A. During January and March, the University will be in full
session with some reduced parking near the Stadium and Village.
During the Games period, when classes are not in session, there
will be parking for faculty and staff to access their places of
work. In addition, Parking Services is working on a variety of alternative
modes of transportation to encourage the presence of fewer cars
on campus regardless of the impact of the Games. See
more details on parking in 2002.
Q. How can I volunteer during
the Games?
A. Volunteering is a great way for University faculty to
get involved with the Games by offering their expertise. Learn
more about volunteer opportunities.
Q. How can I obtain tickets to 2002 Games events?
A. Tickets
can be purchased online through SLOC.
Q. What academic planning guidelines can I recommend for my
students for Spring Semester 2002?
A. Students should be encouraged review course syllabi carefully
at the beginning of the semester, review course material during
the break, and plan course loads according to other commitments.
See more details on guidelines
for students.
