What is AED?

Alpha Epsilon Delta is an international honor society for pre-medical students and the largest pre-med organization in the United States. Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED) is also the world's largest honor society exclusively serving pre-medical education, with a membership exceeding 124,000 in 174 chapters. Established in 1951, the Beta Chapter at the University of Utah has a longstanding tradition of helping individuals who are pursuing a career in the medical field to achieve their goals. Currently the chapter has over 140 members with over 30 new members in 2001 alone. Alpha Epsilon Delta is an affiliated society of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.

Why Should I Join?

Membership in AED allows you to access a wealth of information and opportunities that make the process of completing the required courses, gaining clinical and research experience, and applying to medical school more manageable and efficient. For example, students interested in attending medical school are encouraged to learn more about the realities associated with being a physician. To make this possible students are encouraged to observe doctors on rounds, in examinations, and in surgery. Now you could ask your family doctor and hope he or she is willing to help. However, no matter how willing they are, they may not be able to do so. Perhaps the hospital or clinic they work in does not allow such activities. On the other hand, with AED, services for locating willing physicians are made readily available.

As A Member of AED You Will Enjoy

  • Opportunities to hear from medical school officials from across the country. Visiting officials have included representatives from the University of Utah, George Washington University, Stanford, Creighton, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and Washington University in St. Louis...with more to come.
  • First priority to have informal interviews with these visiting medical school officials.
  • Clinical experience at local health care institutions including St. Marks Hospital, Salt Lake Regional Medical Center, University Medical Center, and the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
  • Research and internship positions in areas including Anesthesiology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Human and Molecular Genetics, Medicinal Chemistry, Oncology, and many more.
  • Service opportunities in both campus and community organizations including the Campus AIDS Project, the Utah Healing Arts Program, and Helping Hands/Helping Hearts.
  • Association with other students from a variety of majors and backgrounds who share common interests and challenges in both formal and informal settings including annual banquets, national conferences, and holiday celebrations.
