New pictures have been posted in Paul's Pictures Page. Check them out! Paul's Pictures.
February's solar party was cancelled due to cloud cover. I'm holding March's solar party on wednesday the 14th starting at 4:30. Stop by and hopefully
the sun will be more active and the skies clear.
The Observatory will be open for a star party during spring break. Greg will be here to hold it on that wednesday. I'll keep you updated if plans change.
Remember to change your clocks back tonight for daylight savings!
I just added a new section called "Check This Out". I hope to fill it with information about astronomy, astronomy events, and new astronomy projects. I have added something that some may be interested in so go ahead and Check This Out.
I finally finished a slideshow presentation to help Greg's and my lectures for scout groups looking to get their belt loop. Hopefully it will help show them what we are talking about in a much more clear way.
Weelllll, it looks like the sun is not going to cooperate with us and it doesnt look like there will be anything to see as far as sun spots go. So once again
I'm going to postpone the solar party until the 28th of March. I hope once more that the sun and weather will cooperate (at the same time) to give us a good show!
Same time as usual (4:30) and will be fallowed by a star party. This wednesday's Star Party looks to still be on so see you there!
Ooook... so the weather sucks again... and the sun is still almost completely bare. So once again, I'm moving the solar party until April 11th. If the sky is clear
this wednesday night, then feel free to come up for a star party.
Summer break is arriving in May for the University so that means Tuesdays and Thursdays are once again going to become available for tours.
Trying to get the sun and weather to cooperate at the same time has been a real pain in the butt. Once AGAIN they both seem not to cooperate so maybe the saturday the 21st will be good.
We are planning a special star and solar party on the 21st of April to commemorate Astronomy Day. Check back later in the week to see a list of events and a time table for them. The Salt Lake Astronomical Society and the Clark Planetarium are also planning some events that same saturday so be sure to stop by there to see what they have to offer. Their links are on the main page for more information.
I just added a new page called "Observatory Description". It's just what it says, I gave a short description of the telescopes, rooftop, and location of our observatory. Take a look at it in "Observatory Description".
Go here for a listing of events and times for Astronomy Day!
The next solar party is going to be on Wednesday May 16. We have a new Coronodo PST H-Alpha solar telescope so be sure to check it out when you are there!
The solar party will begin at 4:00 and lead into a star party as soon as it gets dark around 8:15.
The next meeting for the U of U Astronomical Society will be on wednesday the 20th of June at 6:00 pm at the observatory. Show up and we will estblish new board members and revise the constitution. Show up if you can!
I will be opening the observatory tonight at 9:15 to try to catch the space station as it transits. I added a new link to the mainpage that sends you to NASA's satellite and station tracking page. The space station will tranist in the north from west to east starting at 9:43 pm.
I missed the meeting last wednesday due to some problems I had to take care of. I will be holding another one as soon as I can find out everybody's schedule that is planning to attend.
The observatory will be open on the 4th of July. Come to see stars and have a great overlook of most of the valley to see the fireworks displays going on all over Salt Lake!
The observatory will be open despite the smoke filled skies. The objects viewed will look worse but you can still see them. So dont let the smokey skies get you down!
I will be opening the observatory on Aug. 13th (monday). We will have a special star party and will attempt to see any meteors from the Perseid Meteor Shower. We'll be up late that night so prepare to be tired!
Our 14" is back up and running great so come by to check it out. Also, there is a bright 3rd magnitude comet out called Comet Holmes. I have new pictures up on Paul's Pics and its under "Comet 17-p Holmes". Take a look at those and if you want to see it before it disappears, possibly for another 115 years, then come by on Monday Nov. 5th at 8 pm or on Wednesday November 7th to have a look for yourself. Star parties in winter time are now starting at 7 pm. If you find the doors are locked, look up and check the skies for clarity. If they're clear, then call 597-1442 to have someone let you in. I've fallen behind on the newsletter due to school but hopefully, I'll get some extra time to get the next one going.
Comet P17 Holmes is still shining nicely in the sky. It's a definate naked eye object now. Look north after dark to spot a bright star in the northeast. Go up from there until you can see a dim fuzzy spot making a triangle with two somewhat bright stars. Come by the observatory on a wednesday night to view it through our scopes.
There is a total Lunar Eclipse on February 20th beginning at 6:43 pm. For more info, contact Paul or go here for the NASA page.
