Shelia Pepe, Colby Brewer & ME!!
Be a part of art, a 14,000 cubic feet art installation to be exact. This art installation will be a participatory experience: aspiring artists, knitters – anyone with a desire to be a part of something big will be needed to complete this sculpture, drawing, and installation hybrid. The installation will be a two-part, layered collaborative project of sorts. The initial collaboration is between artists Sheila Pepe and Colby Brewer. Both artists create site-responsive installations, which redefine an empty gallery space as both a walk-in environment and psychological playground. First, Brewer will create an installation, re-directing the path of the viewer/participants as they pass through and around the space, and serving as a connecting point. Then Pepe (whose recent work includes a public knitting two city buses together) will respond to Brewer’s installation and the gallery. She will “draw” in the space with everyday domestic and industrial materials, such as rubber bands and shoelaces. Pepe knots, crochets, and ties these elements into looping, draping, web-like forms, whose “drawn” character is echoed by the shadows they cast. The final layer of the collaboration belongs to anyone who would like to be a part of this intriguing, one of kind installation. A variety materials will be provided on-site for participants who may tie, knot, or crochet their own additions to the piece. Runs through April 24.

The Journeys through Asian Art exhibition showcases objects from the world’s largest continent, illuminating the development of art in India, the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea and China. The exhibition features works from the Museum’s permanent collection. Runs through Dec. 20, 2010.

Africa: Arts of a Continent is a permanent rotating exhibition that focuses on four cultures: the Dogon of Mali, the Baulé of the Ivory Coast, the Yoruba of Nigeria and the Kuba Kingdom of the Congo. Africa: Arts of a Continent also incorporates several ancient Egyptian burial objects from various dynasties and explores the importance of the Nile.
