Shabbat at Utah Hillel and in Salt Lake City

  • Tzedek Hillel Social Action progamming ideas.
  • Hillel's Minyan Netivot. A Saturday morning davening and Torah discussion group, meeting monthly in members' houses beginning. We take turns leading a traditional Shacharit service (9:30 AM), a Torah discussion or lesson (also led by a designated member) at 11:00 and potluck lunch at noon, followed by Shabbat singing. Everyone welcome to join for all or the part that interests you. This joint Hillel/Kol Ami project is a learner's minyan: we intend to teach each other the skills necessary to lead prayer and Torah learning. If you are interested in joining for traditional/egalitarian prayer, study and/or discussion, please contact us at Hillel@lists.utah.edu.
  • Utah Hillel Shabbat Dinners. About once a month, a group of students meet for dinner and songs. Contact us at Hillel@lists.utah.edu for more information, times and locations.
  • Make your own Challah. Use our easy recipe or send us yours.
  • Learn traditional services or write creative ones; learn the home blessings or how to make havdalah. See Learning About Shabbat.

Friday Evening Services in Salt Lake City / Park City.

Utah Hillel joins with the JCC Singles group for Friday Shabbat dinners on the last Shabbat of each month at the JCC. Utah Hillel doesn't have regular Friday services (would you like to organize them?). But Hillel members are welcome in town at Kol Ami, Chavurah B'Yachad, Bais Menachem and Temple Har Shalom / Park City Jewish Center.

  • Traditional Egalitarian: Friday evenings at sundown Kol Ami offers a traditional service. Congregants and Cantor Loeb alternate leading a short, participatory, davening service in the Pepper Chapel. The singing is spirited; there is no sermon (sometimes the Cantor or a congregant offers a 5 minute lesson). The crowd is small and informal, often with as many children as adults and as many singles as couples, and mostly University affiliates. For students and newcomers, Hillel can also arrange a Shabbat dinner invitation afterwards at a faculty home.

During the summer, this service is replaced by a larger traditional service meeting alternate weeks in congregants' homes. Call Kol Ami for times, locations etc.

Don't know your prayers? Come anyway; you will quickly learn the tunes. Click for a downloadable transliterated siddur. For more, see our Learn about Shabbat page.

  • Reform:
    • Kol Ami's Rabbi Wenger reports:"Every Friday evening, we have a Reform service. Sometimes these are creative, sometimes we follow the Reform Minhag as found in Gates of Prayer." 7:30 PM in the main sanctuary. During the summer, this group meets alternate weeks in congregants' homes. Call Kol Ami for details.
    • Temple Har Shalom / Park City Jewish Center. Call 435-649-2276 for more information.
    • Brith Sholem, Ogden, offers lay-led Reform services Fridays at 7:30 PM. Call 392-7688 for more information.
  • Reconstructionist: "Chavurah B'Yachad is Salt Lake's Reconstructionist affiliated congregation meeting two Fridays a month at the JCC on 17th South in the fall and winter and in City Creek Canyon during the spring and summer. We are a small congregation of approximately 40 families. There is no permanent rabbi; all services are conducted by the members of the community. Friday Shabbot services are concluded with a vegetarian potluck. Once a month, there is a special children's service or activity. If there is a need or desire, students will be paired with someone from our membership for Shabbot meals."
  • Modern Orthodox: Friday evening services at sundown at Sha'arei Tefila Synagogue. Consult their webpage for details.
  • Utah Hillel Shabbat Dinners. About once a month, a group of students meet for dinner and songs. Contact us at Hillel@lists.utah.edu for more information, times and locations.
