Mark Bean, Assistant Dean of International Programs

Mark is a retired US Air Force colonel and is currently an ABD PhD candidate in international relations/comparative politics. He has had considerable international experience as a pilot and politico-military affairs specialist over his 25+ year Air Force career, including service as the US Air Attaché in China, and in 7 years as an Asia marketing manager in private business. He is a graduate of the Air Force Academy, has an MA in economics from UCLA, and graduated from the National War College in Washington, DC while simultaneously serving as a National Defense University senior research fellow and writing a book on Northeast Asian security published by the NDU press.

The Office of International Programs (OIP) works in conjunction with the International Center to establish and maintain International Exchange Agreements and Study Abroad programs and to develop internationally focused programs at the University of Utah. The OIP serves as a resource for international initiatives in departments and colleges, and works closely with Area and International Studies. The OIP also oversees the upper-division international requirement which is designed to help students at the University of Utah appreciate the interdependence of the global community, understand the viewpoints of other nations, and improve communication between people across international borders. Finally, the OIP houses the interim International Visitors Office which assists individuals and groups from abroad who wish to learn more about the University of Utah. The OIP is located in the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
