Master of Arts in World Languages with Public School Licensing and Dual Language Endorsement

The Degree:
The Masters of Arts in World Languages (MWL) degree is a professional teaching degree that is intended to be comparable to an MPA, MSW, MBA, or JD. Categorically, professionals who complete the MWL should meet or exceed the standards setforth in NCLB for "Highly Qualified" teachers. It combines a graduate master’s degree with public school liscensure to teach one or more foreign languages at the secondary level. Students in the program will also be expected to participate in a pre-approved study abroad program to enhance existing language skills.
Purpose:
The purpose of the Language MA is two-fold: 1) to offer a graduate degree in foreign language teaching that equips candidates with excellent content, pedagogy and foreign language skills; and 2) to produce public school teachers who are able to teach any two languages, or a foreign language and a high school subject (history for example). The program will also place an emphasis on contemporary critical-need languages. To meet the minimum anticipated demand for foreign language teachers in the state of Utah. The programs initially aims at graduating 12-15 students each year.
The Audience:
The World Language M.A. is designed for students who have a:
• B.A. in a foreign language: Classics, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish
• B.A. in area studies: Asian, International, Latin American, and Middle East
• B.A. in a subject taught in Utah secondary schools, and proficiency in a foreign language
• B.A. in ESL/TESOL, and proficiency in a foreign language
• M.A. in Languages & Literature or Linguistics, and are interested in teaching in the public schools
