November 19, 2001 -- Alisa Weilerstein, a 20-year-old cellist, makes her Salt Lake City debut at Libby Gardner Concert Hall on the University of Utah campus Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the hall's Virtuoso Series. Weilerstein, along with pianist Vivian Hornik, will perform works by Schumann, Shostakovich, Brahms, and Paganini.

The cellist, the daughter of professional musicians, knew Don Giovanni at age two and a half and made her orchestral debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at age 13. She has since performed with David Zinman and the Baltimore Symphony (among many others), presented solo recitals around the world, and recently recorded a CD for EMI.

Weilerstein has won increasing recognition and critical acclaim for playing that combines natural virtuosity with impassioned musicianship. As The Cleveland Plain Dealer noted, "Cellists twice or thrice Weilerstein's age would be hard-pressed to match the concentrated beauty and power of this young dynamo's playing."

The Virtuoso Series, now in its second year, assembles a group of the most sought-after musicians on the concert circuit today, performing in the intimate Concert Hall, lauded by performers and concert-goers for its outstanding acoustics.

Tickets are available at the Kingsbury Hall ticket office or by calling 801-581-7100. Student tickets are $10, and adult tickets are $25. For more information, please contact Barbara Bryner at the Department of Music at 801-587-9544.
