March 13, 2002 -- The University of Utah was the only school in the state of Utah to make the U.S. News and World Report Honor Roll of College Sports rankings and it was only one of three schools west of the Mississippi to make the list. The other two are Stanford and Hawaii.

Twenty schools were selected for the Honor Roll out of the 321 Division I
colleges in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The complete listing (below) is in alphabetical order and does not include a numerical ranking for each school listed. University of Utah Athletic Director Chris Hill says selection to the Honor Roll shows a long-term commitment to excellence. "It is a great accomplishment to be named to the U.S. World and News Report Honor Roll and a real credit to all of our student-athletes, coaches and staff. This recognition by a highly-respected publication enhances the good reputation our athletics programs already enjoy."

The Honor Roll recognizes schools that did well across five main categories. Schools that had major NCAA infractions during the past ten years were excluded from consideration. The categories considered include:

Sanctions - How many "major infractions" a school was assessed by the NCAA from Feb. 1, 1992, through March 4, 2002, and whether the school was on NCAA probation as of March 4, 2002.

Gender equity - A school's progress in providing athletic opportunities for women, using data from the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act.

Win/loss - Two factors determine the school's record. One is the overall winning percentage calculated for all men and women's school-to-school contests. The second is the school's ranking in NCAA tournaments dominated by multi-school competitions.

Number of sports offered - The number of men and women's intercollegiate varsity sports in which the school participated.

Graduation rate - Two factors determine the ranking. First is the student athlete graduation rate over a six-year period. The second is that rate for the class entering in 1994 compared with the overall student body.
