University of Utah biologist Kate McCulloh used a razor
blade to slice thousands of leaves and stems so she could
learn how water is transported through conduits in plants.
The microcope image on the computer screen behind her shows
a cross section of a leaf stalk, with the conduits appearing
as white spots.
