Connecting to U of U Resources from Off-Campus

Many of the online databases which are easily accessible to the University of Utah campus, such as the Eccles and Marriott Library Article Databases, are paid for by the University on a subscription basis. The U doesn't want just anybody to be able to connect to their web page and use these resources, so in order to make them accessible to off-campus U of U students and faculty a secure proxy server must be used.

This proxy server uses your uNID (University Network ID) to verify that you are a legitimate member of the U, then allows you to access the resources. If you use a modem to dialin to the University's modem pool, you do not need to configure your computer to use a proxy server since you are verified when your computer dials in.

To connect to the U's proxy server, follow these steps:

1) Get a uNID

To register as an authorized user, you must have a Network ID. If you have an email address that ends in @m.cc.utah.edu or @utah.edu, you already have a Network ID.

If you do not have a Network ID, you can sign up for one on the Network ID Application page (https://nid.utah.edu), or by visiting the Marriott Multimedia Center, just inside the first-floor entrance of the Marriott Library.

If you have an account but can't remember your password, call the Campus Help Desk at 581-4000 for assistance.

2) Set up your Web Browser to use the Proxy Server

These examples show how to configure Internet Explorer and Netscape for both Windows and Mac to connect to the U's proxy server. The process is similar for other browsers.

Internet Explorer 5 (Windows)

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Select "Tools" from the menu bar, then select "Internet Options".

3. Select the "Connections" tab along the top. If you're using a modem dial-up connection, select the "Settings" box, if you're using a broadband connection such as DSL or cable modem, select "LAN Settings".

4. In the "Proxy Server" section, click the box "Use a Proxy Server". In the "Address" box type: "http://proxy.utah.edu" and in the "Port" box type: "8080", then click "OK".

Internet Explorer 5 (Mac)

1. Open Internet Explorer

2. Select Edit->Preferences from the menu bar.

3. Scroll down and select the "Proxies" subsection under the Network tab.

4. Make sure the "Web Proxy:" check box is checked.

5. Click the "Settings..." button.

6. In the "Address:" box type "proxy.utah.edu" (do not include "http://"). In the port box type "8080", then click "OK".

Netscape (Windows)

1. Open Netscape.

2. From the "Edit" menu, select "Preferences".

3. Choose the "Advanced" item, then select "Proxies".

4. Click the "Manual proxy configuration" button, the click "View".

5. Type "http://proxy.utah.edu" in the "HTTP" address box, and type "8080" in the "Port" box, then click OK.

Netscape (Mac)

1. Open Netscape.

2. From the "Edit" menu, select "Preferences".

3. Choose the "Advanced" item, then select "Proxies".

4. Click the "Manual proxy configuration" button, the click "Configure".

5. Type "http://proxy.utah.edu" in the "HTTP Proxy" box, and type "8080" in the "Port" box, then click OK.

Mac OS X

Mac OS X uses a centralized location for proxy server information, so you don't need to enter it into separate web browsers.

1. From the Apple Menu, choose "System Preferences"

2. From the "System Preferences" window, choose the "Network" item.

3. In the Network pane, choose your active connection in the "Show" menu (i.e. Modem or Built-in Ethernet), then click the "Proxies" tab. Enter "proxy.utah.edu" for the "Web Proxy (HTTP)", and enter "8080" for the Port, then click "Apply Now" and close System Preferences.

AOL (Mac & Windows)

AOL's web browser will NOT work with the U's proxy server. You can still use AOL to connect to the Internet, but you must use a different browser to connect to the proxy server.

3) Connect to Databases and Indices

Once you've configured your browser, visit the Eccles Library Databases (http://www-medlib.med.utah.edu/library/eresources/eres.html) or the Marriott Library Databases (http://www.lib.utah.edu/dbaccess/alpha/). The first time you try to connect to a restricted database, you will be prompted to enter your Network ID and password. You should only be prompted once per session.

4) Disconnect from the Proxy Server

If you do not disconnect from the proxy server when you're finished using the online resources, it could seriously degrade your download speed for regular internet usage.

To disconnect from the proxy server, follow these steps:

Internet Explorer (Mac & Windows)

Using the instructions above, get to the Proxy Server settings and uncheck the "Use a proxy server" or "Proxy Server" boxes, then click OK.

Netscape (Mac & Windows)

Using the instructions above, get to the Proxy Server settings and select the "Direct connection to the Internet" button, then click OK.

Mac OS X

Using the instructions above, uncheck the "Web Proxy (HTTP)" item in the "Proxies" tab of the "Network" pane in System Preferences, then click "Apply Now".

You may need to close and reopen your browser for these changes to take effect.
