The Graduate Programs in Molecular Biology and Biological Chemistry and the Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program at the University of Utah are pleased to offer:
Undergraduate Research Access for Minorities Program (URAMP)
Focus on underrepresented students
As well as its sister programs:
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)
Focus on all qualified students; underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply
Utah Summer Undergraduate Program (USURP)
Focus on Utah residents not currently attending the University of Utah
These programs provide opportunities to gain research experience in a variety of biological fields, including biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, ecology, genetics, immunology, molecular biology, and neurobiology.
Participating students will be matched, according to their interests, with faculty sponsors. Students will spend ten weeks working in a state-of-the-art research laboratory, as part of their sponsor’s research team. The research experience will be supplemented by an informal seminar series in which students will learn about the research interests and career paths of current students and faculty. To help students understand their research projects more deeply, they will each give verbal presentations and write a short proposal about their individual projects and present a poster at the end of the Program. Academic credit for the program is available. Students are expected to work full-time in the research laboratory for the duration of the program.
We believe this experience will prove invaluable for participants as they prepare for professional careers in research or medicine. A stipend of $3,000, expenses, meals, and housing in the University of Utah dormitories will be provided to all participants. Travel costs are provided for out-of-state students. A number of group activities will be coordinated by the programs to introduce students to and facilitate exploration of the unique Utah landscape.
Applicants must be full-time undergraduates who are citizens of the U.S. or permanent residents. No previous research experience is required.
The dates for the 2010 Program are June 1 - August 6, 2010.
The application deadline is February 22, 2010. Students will be selected based on the following criteria:
* Strong interest in science
* Must have completed one year of college
* College transcript
* Two letters of recommendation
* Personal statement
