Best Practices for the Web

Introduction
About Best Practices

"Best Practices for the Web" provides a set of guidelines to all University of Utah staff engaged in the development and maintenance of World Wide Web (WWW) resources. This document serves as a resource for staff new to creation of web pages and for experienced web developers. While members of the community are encouraged to use the web in pursuit of their teaching, learning, research and service, the contents of all pages under University jurisdiction (on servers funded by University budgets) must comply with University of Utah Policies and Procedures, as well as local, state, and federal laws.

Rationale

  • Consistency - University of Utah web pages are used both by the University community engaged in teaching, research, and service; and also by visitors and prospective members of our community. Consistency in 'look and feel,' in navigation, linking, and presentation help users feel comfortable moving through our sites.
  • Robustness - Adherence to generally accepted standards for HTML, images, etc., routine maintenance of content and links, and good metadata to ensure better search engine results mean that content is easily and reliably accessible.
  • Professionalism - User-centered websites, built in accordance with current standards, technically sound and graphically elegant, demonstrate our commitment to providing the most high-quality experience for our users.
