Optimize Your Site for the Search Engine

Become more search friendly by providing alternate navigations if the following methods have been used for your page:

Image Maps:

  • Avoid server-side image maps..
  • Optimize <alt> tag for the image to incorporate keywords.
  • Provide alternate text links for navigation.
Frames:
  • Provide nonframes.
  • Provide context (page name, logo, footer, etc.) in the individual frame document, in case it is pulled up all by itself by the search engine without the associated frames.
JavaScript:
  • Provide <NOSCRIPT> if the script contains important links (Inktomi does not include a JavaScript interpreter, so it cannot recognize or follow the links).
  • Duplicate navigation in <NOSCRIPT>, or create a site map page with simple HTML links.
PDF, Powerpoint, or Other File Formats:
  • Make sure that it has the necessary original file properties (Title, Subject, and Keywords, etc.). These properties are mapped to meta tags during convertion to HTML before indexing.
Dynamic Data:
  • If you have pages generated from a database and the URLs include characters such as ? or & which are ignored by most search engines including Inktomi , have the web server automatically rewrite these URLs to strip away the ? or &.
